SMAC Methane Intelligence Tool
Together with the team at Climate TRACE and some assistance from AI, we have developed a free, publicly accessible tool that gives subnational governments a first profile of their methane emissions. As of Fall 2026 it covers the 37 states, provinces, and regions across 15 countries that are members or observers of the Subnational Methane Action Coalition (SMAC), showing sector shares, changes over time, the top 20 emission sources per jurisdiction, and comparisons with peer jurisdictions. An AI-enabled assistant answers questions using a jurisdiction’s own emissions profile and SMAC’s resource library. In the next few months, we are planning on expanding it to include all states and provinces around the world. Then, we will use the inventory data to help build methane action plans across multiple jurisdictions.
The tool is in beta, and we are partnering with the Maryland Department of the Environment and Jalisco, Mexico to pilot it and to test how modeled estimates can complement existing state expertise and planning processes.
