California Climate Stabilization

California has one of the most robust climate strategies in the world, including a suite of laws, regulations, market-based tools, and executive actions that work across three pillars: greenhouse gas emission reductions, adaptation and resilience, and carbon removal. But attacks on California’s authority to regulate emissions and slower than necessary progress on emission reductions—both in California and at a global scale—threaten the success of achieving GHG reduction targets, increasing the urgency of managing and planning for potentially catastrophic climate risk, including the risk that climate change impacts derail the politics and budgets needed to accelerate the energy transition.

California is well positioned to build understanding of how climate stabilization, which encompasses large-scale efforts to alter the climate system in order to slow down or reverse global warming, could mitigate the worst impacts of climate change locally and globally. CLEE’s work explores how climate risk and climate stabilization could be approached in the context of California’s climate strategy.
